Illusion Mage Review Conclusion

Illusion Mage gives us an alternative to buying expensive products that don’t come with a guarantee that it is what we are looking for.  Although, it may not quite live up to the more expensive brands of 3D animation packages, it does offer a large number of features for the price.  Illusion Mage is an excellent software package for beginners because it is very cheap and easy to use.  The instructional videos are well thought out and informative.  Professionals can often afford the more expensive software that the big boys use, but why would we want to pay thousands when we are just learning?  Illusion Mage provides a wide range of features for us to “cut our teeth” on without needing to take out a second mortgage.  This is a phenomenal product if you are learning or just want something to make some quick 3D animation without diving too deep into programming or software engineering.  If you are looking for an entry-level 3D animation product then look no further than Illusion Mage!

Illusion Mage is an all-in-one solution for your 3D animation needs.  It offers a wide array of features to help you with 3D animation.  Illusion Mage tries to duplicate many of the features found in Maya and 3DS Max for you to “learn the ropes” of 3D modeling and animation while still being able to afford it.  We are under no illusions (hehe) about who will come out on top in this battle, but we want to see if Illusion Mage can compete while still being a fraction of the cost of the other two.

Illusion Mage offers modeling, rendering, game creation, texturing, visual 3D effects, and a host of other features.  The real test is how well it accomplishes these tasks.  The 3D modeling is very nice and offers realistic creation of faces and shapes.  The 3D supports a wide range of object types such as NURBS surfaces, polygon meshes, and B-spline.  Illusion Mage performs very well in rendering these 3D shapes when considering the price.  The drawing is very smooth and lifelike although it could be a little better.  Illusion Mage is capable of producing lifelike images by even novices.

Illusion Mage is available on Windows and Mac platforms.  This is very nice since not all of us use Windows for our computer needs.  Unfortunately, Linux is not supported by Illusion Mage.

The user interface of Illusion Mage really shines.  It is extremely intuitive and does not require much knowledge for anyone to realize what each button means.  The interface allows the user to easily navigate the various modules and create just about anything they can imagine.  If you are having any trouble with the interface or another part of the Illusion Mage software package, a number of tutorials are included to assist with learning the software.

3DS Max vs. Illusion Mage

Game creation is often an expensive proposition.  Illusion Mages main competition in game creation is 3DS Max.  3DS Max has been a mainstay in the games industry.  It is used by the majority of the large game manufacturers for a number of reasons.  An individual may find it difficult to purchase this product since the price is well above $3000.00.  There is a reason for that price tag though!

Illusion Mage has a tough task of competing with 3DS Max in game creation.  3DS Max has a wide array of features that make it a very capable tool in creating professional video games.  3DS Max is mainly used for video game creation so its uses are tailored to those needs.  It is capable of animation, modeling, lighting, rendering, and stunning visual 3D effects.  The various technologies used for these tasks are comprehensive and provide an excellent product.  We can see why this is the industry standard for creating video games.  Illusion Mage cannot compete in this arena with this software.

Illusion Mage does have a leg up on Max in the user interface though.  The interface for Max is somewhat clunky and difficult for a beginner.  There are a dizzying amount of user interface modes that can completely confuse an entry-level 3D artist.  That is fine because this software is not intended for beginners.  Illusion Mage is intended for those uninitiated into the world of 3D animation and tailors its user interface to suit that need.

Maya vs. Illusion Mage

Illusion Mage also competes with Maya in the realm of cartoon animation.  Maya is the gold standard in cartoon animation and has been used by companies that often produce high quality animated movies.  This shows in the price of Maya (also over $3000.00).  Illusion Mage allows for creation of animated 3D cartoons, but can it compete with the standard-bearer?

Illusion Mage tries to offer 3D animation in the same vein as Maya without costing the same amount.   Maya is able to charge these insane prices because it does a fantastic job at creating animated movies.  It features a very versatile modeler that is capable of producing some hard to believe realism in the animation.  Although it is capable of producing video games, it really shines in the area of animated movies due to the visual effects capabilities.  Illusion Mage does provide animation, but not to the same extent as what one can achieve with Maya.

One drawback of Maya compared to Illusion Mage is that it is one of the more complex software packages to learn.  It is very deep and extremely large.  You can easily get lost playing around with the many features and options available in this package.  Being a professional and giving you ample time to learn the program is a prerequisite before tackling in-depth projects using Maya.  Illusion Mage is much easier to learn considering it is user-friendly and comes with so many tutorial videos.

The comparison between the main competitions for Illusion Mage was actually closer than what one would assume would take place.  While Illusion Mage just can’t compete with either of the competitors in their particular fields (game creation and animation), it does an adequate job to justify the much lower cost.  Maya and Max are the juggernauts of the 3D animation industry.  They perform at the top of their game when they are in the hands of a professional.  Unfortunately, the price tag for these two pieces of software is staggeringly high.  Illusion Mage offers many of the same features for a fraction of the cost.  While Illusion Mage can’t compete in the quality department with these two giants, it is an excellent tool for a beginner or a hobbyist.  We don’t all have the time or the money to learn the more expensive products, so Illusion Mage allows us the freedom to dabble in our passion or learn the ropes before stepping up to big boys.
